PowerMyWay Prepay Program

GVP's PowerMyWay Prepay Program keeps you in control.

Grand Valley Power’s newest option for paying your bill puts you in charge of your account. It’s called the PowerMyWay Prepay Program. Similar to purchasing food, gasoline, or groceries - prepay billing allows you to pay for electricity how and when you choose.

You can "fill up" your PowerMyWay account much like you would your car’s gas tank. When your account gets low, add more money any time of day or night. Your account is right at your fingertips, either through your smartphone with our GVP app or on your computer.

How does it work?

  • Load Your Account:

Grand Valley Power members who wish to enroll in the PowerMyWay Program can load their account with money online via SmartHub, or over the phone 24 hours a day using a credit card or checking account number. Funds can also be loaded onto an account by visiting us in person at our main office using cash, check, or credit card.

  • Use Electricity:

Money will be withdrawn from member's PowerMyWay account following a daily bill calculation. Once the account reaches the low credit balance threshold, members will receive a daily email or text message notifying them that you are close to empty.

  • Reload Account:

Members reload their account with funds to continue electric service. If an account reaches a $0 balance that member's electricity will be automatically disconnected until more money is loaded on their account.

Who can sign up?

Most residential members are eligible unless they prefer to participate in:

  • Net Metering
  • Auto Pay (EFT)
  • Budget Billing

Please note, that if you do not have a residential rate account (FH-1 rate), you cannot participate in the program. If you have a medical condition or necessity that requires electricity, please contact us.

How do I get started with PowerMyWay?

To learn more about this program or to sign up, visit our office or call us at 970-242-0040, and one of our representatives will be happy to go over the program with you. Please note, you’ll need access to either a smartphone or a computer with internet capabilities in order to participate.

PowerMyWay FAQs

How does the PowerMyWay Program work?

Grand Valley Power's Prepay Program puts you in the driver’s seat for purchasing electricity. Think of it as if you were filling up your car with gas. You monitor the fuel level and decide when you should re‐fill. Adding money to your account allows you to “refuel”. You simply pay for your electricity before it is used.

Your meter is read daily and your account balance is reduced by the previous day’s usage. In the event that we cannot get a reading from your meter, our system will estimate your usage based on historical usage. In the event that an estimated usage is used, the system will “true” up the charges when a valid reading is received.

How much do I need to get started?

New members – A $100 balance is required to start a PowerMyWay account. This is in addition to the standard $20 service connection fee.

Existing members – Your current unbilled usage (to date of enrollment into PowerMyWay) will be calculated and billed, in addition to a $100 minimum balance is required.

  • If there is an outstanding balance, payment arrangements can be made to pay-off this balance.
  • If there is already a deposit on your account (for when you originally started service), your deposit will be applied to your unbilled or past due balances or towards your prepay account for credit.

All accounts will need to agree to a program term of 12 months. After the 12 months is met, you can choose to return to a conventional account if you prefer.

Please contact us to evaluate your account and determine if PowerMyWay is a great option for you!

How will I know when my account balance is low?

Low balance notifications are automatically sent to you through email or text message. You choose the method you want to use for receiving notifications through SmartHub. If the account balance reaches zero, power is automatically disconnected until payment on the account is received.

Low balance notices are sent based on your preferences. The system defaults to a seven-day low balance notice, based on your usage. This simply means, that when you start to receive notices, you should add more money to your account to avoid any disconnect.

What if my service is disconnected while I'm on the Prepay Program?

You will first receive notification by text message or email that you have a balance due and you are subject to disconnect. If your account balance is not brought above $0 by noon on the day of notice, your service will be disconnected.

After disconnect, the account balance must be brought to a minimum $25 by making a payment by phone, internet or in person. Your service will then be automatically restored within 15 minutes. No disconnect or reconnect fees will be charged.

We strongly encourage you to not solely rely on notifications and to monitor your account and electric usage through SmartHub.

Is PowerMyWay Prepay right for me?

The PowerMyWay Program is not for everyone. However, it does have some benefits!

It may be attractive because it allows you to make payments when its most convenient to you.

  • Do you prefer to make smaller, more frequent payments or larger, less frequent payments?
  • Does your paycheck date come at an odd time of month?
  • Would you rather choose your own electric bill due date?
  • Are you on a fixed budget?
  • Does your account require a high deposit?

Accounts on prepay billing will avoid higher deposits, late penalties, disconnect charges, and reconnect fees. It's energy your way and is flexible for you.

Prepay billing also helps members to closely monitor electric usage. Statistics have shown that accounts on prepay billing tend to use less electricity because they are more aware of the amount of power they are consuming. You can analyze your daily, weekly and monthly usage to make smarter energy choices.

Does the PowerMyWay Prepay Program cost more?

With PowerMyWay, each kWh costs the same, and is just like a conventional residential account, All existing fees, such as the monthly grid connectivity fee, continue to apply and are deducted on a prorated, daily basis.

How do you know how much power I use each day?

Our automated, digital meters provide you and GVP near real-time energy use information about how much energy is used and when. As your home uses electricity, your account balance updates daily, depending on the amount of kilowatt- hours (kWh) used. These meters are safe, reliable and only monitor energy use. They are not able to decipher anything other than kilowatt hours used. The meter also helps the cooperative detect power outages more quickly and efficiently.

When I look at my balance, why is there a negative number when I know I have money on the account?

SmartHub displays your PowerMyWay account as a “credit” balance, meaning when you pay GVP $25, it will appear as -$25 because this is what the co-op owes you. As you use electricity each day, you will see this number decrease based on your total usage for the day. We also will note an estimated time of what $25 in credit means in days. This is automatically calculated for you based on your current energy use.

How do I make payments?

We provide a variety of ways to accomplish this task. It’s simple and easy!

    • Use “Make a Payment” feature in SmartHub portal or by app
    • Call our automated 24/7 Pay-By-Phone number at 877-760-7435
    • Call (970) 242-0040 M-F from 8 am to 5 pm
    • Visit our office M-F from 8 am – 5pm

Payments can be made by mail or drop box, however, please be aware that these methods of payment can take several days to process and are not immediate. Plan accordingly to ensure your account has credit to prevent disconnect.

Will I get a monthly bill?

No. Instead of receiving a traditional bill once a month, usage is calculated on a daily basis, allowing members to purchase electricity as needed. Usage and current credit balances can be tracked in SmartHub, GVP’s customer portal and mobile app.

How much money should I keep on my PowerMyWay account?

That’s one of the best benefits! You decide how much electricity to purchase at a time – enough to last a day, week, month or more. We do have a minimum amount of $5 per transaction. If your account falls below zero, your electric service will be subject to disconnection. Reconnection requires you to pay a minimum prepay credit of $25.
